A warning - once you try a real soap to shave with, you'll never use a commercial shaving cream again!

Shaving soap is not much different than regular soap except for some added cosmetic clay. The clay helps give the soap extra "slip" and also works to purify your skin. (Think of a clay or mud mask.)

For this project you'll need:

    Melt and Pour soap base - I'm using a plain white base, though you can use clear, aloe, goat's milk or other base just as easily
    2 tsps. of clay per pound of soap base - I prefer Bentonite clay, though you can use Kaolin, Rhassoul or Fuller's Earth (Buy soapmaking clays direct)
    A mug, cup or tin to put the soap into
    Fragrance or Essential oil appropriate for the person using the soap - be sure that it's mild enough for sensitive skin - I'm using a light combination of lavender, orange and patchouli
    Basic understanding and equipment for melt and pour soap making
    And though not part of the recipe, you'll also need a shaving brush. (Buy Direct)

]Note: If you want to make a batch of shaving soap from scratch, check out my Cold Process Shaving Soap recipe. Get all of your ingredients together and:

    Melt your soap base in the microwave or a double boiler
    Once it's melted, add in 2 tsps. of clay for each pound of soap base you've melted
    Stir well, making sure that all of the clay gets dissolved
    Add in your fragrance or essential oil and stir
    Pour it into your mugs or cups. If you have gotten a lot of bubbles from stirring, just spritz them with a bit of rubbing alcohol
    When the soap has cooled and thickened a bit, give it one more gentle stir. The clay can sometimes have a tendency to settle to the bottom of the mug.

That's it! Experiment with different clays, soap bases or fragrances. They'll all be just a little bit different. Remember that a real shaving soap is not going to be as foamy as a commercial shaving cream - but with the clay, it has just as much "slip."

Homemade Shaving Soap Recipe

Most men need to shave every day; unfortunately this can often leave the skin feeling dry and taught. With this in mind all the ingredients in this homemade shaving soap recipe have been chosen for their excellent moisturizing and conditioning qualities.

This homemade moisturizing soap has a very manly and nutty fragrance and with both the clary sage and cedar wood essential oils having aphrodisiac properties, it will defiantly leave you feeling fresh and masculine.

Ingredients For This Shaving Soap Recipe

    9 fl oz (250 ml) Olive oil
    3 fl oz (75ml) Avocado oil
    2 1/2 oz (60g) Coconut oil
    1 1/2 oz (40g) Palm oil
    1 1/2 oz (40g) Beeswax
    1 oz (25g) Cocoa butter
    2 1/2 oz (65g) Lye (also known as caustic soda)
    8 fl oz (230ml) Mineral water
    3 teaspoons (13ml) Clary sage essential oil
    1 teaspoon (6ml) Cedar wood essential oil

Making this Homemade Shaving Soap Recipe

Before you begin making this homemade shampoo, take a moment to read the Make Homemade Soap Process. In this overview you will see photos and obtain a good feel for the basic soap making procedure (cold process).

The page importantly describes how to quicken the trace stage (thickening stage) using a stick blender.
Method

Make sure the room you are making this homemade moisturizing soap recipe in is well ventilated.
 
Oil a plastic mould and then line it with greaseproof paper.

In a good sized stainless steel pan, melt the beeswax, cocoa butter, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil and palm oil over a low heat.

Put on the protective eyewear, mask, apron and long rubber gloves.

Pour the mineral water into a plastic bucket or large jug.

Slowly add the lye, using a plastic spatula to stir until dissolved.

Use two jam thermometers, one for the lye mix and one for the oil mix. Make sure you are still wearing the protective clothing.

When both mixtures reach the same temperature 131 F (55 C) immediately pour the lye mix into the oils, using a hand whisk, stir continuously until well combined.

Continue to stir until it has thickened enough, when a bit of the soap is drizzled over the top it leaves a line/ trace. Pour in the clary sage and cedar wood essential oils and stir thoroughly.

Pour the mixture into the mould that you prepared before. If you are planning on cutting the soap into bars, swirl it with a spatula.

Leave it covered with cardboard, in a warm, dry place for 24 hrs in order for it to set.

Line a wooden board with greaseproof paper, wearing your protective gloves turn the soap out onto the board.

Use a carving knife to cut the soap into bars or rounds, or use a biscuit cutter.

Put them into a tray lined with greaseproof paper and leave in a warm dark place for four weeks.

Turn them occasionally.

Foaming Shave Soap Recipe

This is the shave soap I use most often in the shower because it is easy, inexpensive and works great. Some men may find it harsh on the face due to the high liquid castille content.
Ingredients:

    1/4 cup Natural Aloe Vera Gel (not juice!)
    1/4 cup Liquid Castille Soap
    1 TBSP Olive or Almond Oil
    1/4 cup warm Distilled Water (or lavender infused)
    Vitamin E or Grapefruit Seed Extract (to preserve)
    Essential Oils for Fragrance (optional) – I use lavender
    8 ounce or larger Foaming Soap Bottle

How To Make It:

    Mix ingredients in foamer bottle and shake gently until mixed.
    Shake well before each use.

This recipe will last a couple of months (I use up within about 2 months, so I don’t know beyond that). I don’t recommend citrus oils if you are going to be in the sun, since they increase sun sensitivity.

Natural Bar Shave Soap Recipe

If you don’t happen to have all these extra ingredients on hand, this is any easy way to modify a regular bar soap to make it more shave-friendly. It is a little time consuming, but these bar soaps last a long time and are great for making shave mugs if the men in your life happen to use shave mugs and brushes.
Ingredients:

    1 bar of natural, handcrafted soap (store bought regular soaps don’t work!) These are my favorite, but I’m biased since I make them icon smile Homemade Shaving Soap Recipes
    1 TBSP olive or almond oil or aloe vera gel
    1-2 TBSP white clay, french clay, kaolin, or cosmetic clay

How to Make It:

    Grate soap and on low heat, melt soap down with oil or aloe vera. It will take a while, so be patient and stir often
    Once melted, stir in the cosmetic clay (this makes a richer lather and is great for the skin)
    Pour into molds (I use cardboard) or old mugs and let set for several days until it re-hardens. Will last months and will cure more over time, making it longer lasting.

Make Shaving Soap at Home

Make shaving soap and forego the chemical and aerosol canned stuff for a smooth shave with all natural ingredients. Creating a mug of shaving soap is not difficult to do and whether you use it yourself or make several for gifts, homemade shaving soap is cheaper and often better than what you'll get from the store.

Clay Shaving Soap Recipe
To make homemade shaving soap, you'll need several items. First, you'll need some soap base, such as pure shea butter. Also, get some cosmetic facial clay. You'll be able to find both of these ingredients at soap or candle making stores. You'll also need some lavender essential oil and a sturdy ceramic bowl or mug.

Ingredients You Will Need:
Soap base, such as pure shea butter
Cosmetic facial clay
Lavender essential oil

Cut the soap base into small chunks and melt it in a double boiler. Stir to break up any small pieces. When the soap base is fully melted, stir in the clay. When it is fully dissolved, add no more than 10 drops of essential oil. Stir thoroughly, then pour the mixture into the ceramic mug. Let the soap mixture cool completely before using. To use the shaving soap, get a natural boar hair bristled brush wet and work it into the surface of the soap. A rich lather should form on the brush; proceed to lather up the face for shaving.

Castile Shaving Soap Recipe
Ingredients You Will Need:
1 cup distilled water
Grated Castile soap
2 teaspoons coconut oil
3 tablespoons almond oil
1 tablespoon borax powder
10 drops essential oil

Boil distilled water in a saucepan. Carefully pour the grated soap into the water and stir until it is dissolved. Pour the soapy water into a blender, then add coconut oil, almond oil and borax powder. Blend until the mixture is whipped and creamy. Add no more than 10 drops of essential oil and blend completely. Scoop the shaving soap mixture into a ceramic mug and let it harden, about 24 hours. A wet shaving brush should generate a good fluffy lather just right for shaving.


Shave Cream Recipe

I don’t use this recipe as often, and more in the winter for extra moisturizing, but it makes a rich, creamy lather and works really well. This one is also better for men’s faces, as it is more gentle than the above recipe.
Ingredients:

    1/4 cup olive, almond or coconut oil
    2-3 TBSP Shea or Cocoa Butter
    1/4 cup Aloe Gel or Honey
    1 TBSP Kaolin clay or white cosmetic clay (optional)
    2 tsp baking soda
    1/4 cup Liquid Castille Soap
    Vitamin E or GSE (to preserve)

To Make:

    Melt the oil and shea/cocoa butter in a double boiler until just melted.
    Remove from heat and add other ingredients
    Whisk or blend well for several minutes
    Transfer to jar or container to store
    Check while it is cooling to make sure it doesn’t start to separate. If it does, shake or mix well to re-incorporate.
    Lasts up to two months (not sure about longer)

Homemade shaving cream

Homemade shaving cream is made from ingredients found at home and in the kitchen. These are usually plant based ingredients. The numerous brands of shaving creams and their popularity across the world makes it important for us to know more about them.

With rising concerns about using products which have chemical ingredients that might harm our health or the health of the planet, the popularity of homemade options have been increasing.

Why should I be aware of this?

Shaving creams are an item of necessity. It is important to know the ingredients of the product you are applying twice if not once daily on your skin. Brands across the world do not list all the ingredients used in their products under the pretext of it being a trade secret.

How does this affect me?

There are many ingredints used in the shaving cream, some of which are neurotoxin while some are skin or sense organ toxin and some are both. It is important to make an informed choice. Making shaving creams at home is also an option.

Homemade shaving cream does not stay as creamy as normal shaving cream but people have found it is effective if not better than its commercial counterparts.

All about homemade shaving creams

Shaving cream is applied to the skin to facilitate hair removal. It softens and moistens the skin and the hair, thus making shaving more comfortable.

Here is a recipe for a shaving cream prepared completely from plant based ingredients.

A basic shaving cream that is easy to make at home, requires the following ingredients:

    8 ounces glycostearin (diglycol stearate)
    8 ounces heavy mineral oil
    40 ounces water
    pot
    double boiler


In the double boiler, combine the heavy mineral oil and glycostearin and heat to 150 degrees. In the other, separate pot, heat the water to 150 degrees, and then slowly stir in the glycosterian/mineral oil mixture. Once mixed, remove from heat and let cool. When the mixture is cool, you can add perfume if desired. Any extra cream that you have left over can be stored in jars or decorative tins.


For a more traditional, old fashioned shaving soap:

    ½ teaspoon sunflower oil
    ¼ cup unscented glycerin soap
    double boiler
    decorative cup or mug

In a double boiler, cut the glycerin soap into chunks and melt. Quickly stir in the sunflower oil and move from the double boiler into a cup or mug. The mixture will set very quickly. To use, wet a shaving brush with warm water and rub against soap until a nice lather is created.

Homemade shaving cream and the environment

Your homemade shaving cream is very environment friendly. It is not adding chemicals to your waterways or adding to your carbon foortprint.

Ja se već duže vreme brijam domaćim sapunom, koji pravim otprilike ovako (kažem otprilike pošto obično stavim šta ima na lageru):

1. Istopim jedan obični merimin sapun za bebe sa vodom.
2. Dodam u to kokosovu mast.
3. Dodam malo ulja od masline.
4. Dodam malo sode bikarbone.
5. Sipam sve u limenku od tunjevine i ostavim da se stegne.

Ako smeša neće da se sjedini lepo dodajte malo vode. Možete i neka etarska ulja, parfeme, vitamin E i sl... Zanimljivo je da nemam iritaciju kože sa ovim, pošto mi je inače koža dosta suva i sa običnim gelovima i penama me zateže nakon brijanja. Mana je što pena nešto kraće traje, ali meni ne smeta.
